Raising the Roof: Whonnock Roofing & Gutters Ltd. Revamps BC’s Residential Steep Roofer Program

Approximately one month ago, SkillsTradesBC contacted us at Whonnock Roofing & Gutters Ltd to assist in overhauling their Residential Steep Roofer (RSR) program. Many of you may not know that in 2012, my brother and I were invited to help design this program. Our primary focus was the 300-question multiple-choice exam administered at the course’s conclusion. We were tasked with reviewing all questions, removing those that were unclear, rephrasing others for clarity, and adding or deleting questions to better align with industry standards as we deemed appropriate.

The RSR program has not been updated in 13 years, exceeding the typical 10-year cycle for trade programs. Consequently and just last week, SkillsTradesBC invited us back to conduct a full one day site visit and facility review of one of the premier roofing schools in British Columbia to ensure it meets the high standards SkillsTradesBC sets for providing students with proper guidance and knowledge. Following the visit, I was asked to submit a report detailing my findings, recommendations and requirements.

Tools for Residential Steep Roofer Program

All roofers in British Columbia pursuing their Red Seal or Residential Steep Roofer (RSR) certification are required to attend this school and complete the RSR program. We are immensely honoured to play a pivotal role in designing and refining this program, setting the industry standard and staying ahead of the competition. I am incredibly proud of our company’s leadership and reputation in this industry. Being entrusted to help shape the next phase of the overhauled RSR program is an honour, and it’s a privilege we are proud to undertake at Whonnock Roofing & Gutters Ltd.
