Having proper roof roof ventilation is extremely important to the longevity of your roof and home. You can have Owens Corning’s, Certainteed or Malarkey shingles on your roof, but if you don’t have proper ventilation, they will not stand up to the test of time. Top roofing practices and roofing estimates should always include a whole analysis of the roof. This would and should include: ventilation, insulation and roof deck.
For today, I’d like to focus on roof ventilation. In the pictures below, you will see pictures of a project that we just finished in the Maple Ridge area. This roof had major ventilation problems. The roof wasn’t breathing at all and, as a result, the home owner had to spend way more money replacing all the sheathing and some sub structure. There was no soffit venting and the insulation was plugging the existing roof vents. Having proper roof ventilation is key to long happy and healthy roof system.
Keep in mind that proper roofing ventilation will:
- Reduce moisture that causes mild, wood rot and mildew.
- Prevent moisture that can dampen insulation and affect its efficiency.
- Prevent ice dams and build up at the eaves.
- extend the life of your roof, roof strictest and roof warranty.
- Keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
This customer also opted to have ice and water membrane, from Owens Corning, called “Weatherguard G”, installed over the entire roof deck, prior to the shingle installation. This is a high grade rubberized underlay that actually adheres to the roof deck. It can be used in place of the standard synthetic underlay, commonly used to help give your roof that extra bit of protection.
They say pictures are worth a 1000 words. Please take a look at the before/during and after pics of this roofing project that was done in the Ridge Meadows area.
